FAQ

What should I do for an in-class essay?

You should create an outline first in your blue book. That way, in case you run out of time, the grader will at least see what you were going to write in your essay. You should also keep track of time. If you can choose one out of a few questions, stick to the one question you pick and the one you know more about.

And, it is most important that you READ THE DIRECTIONS and answer only what is required. If a professor tells you to answer only one question, only answer that ONE question. Do not assume that answering extra questions will earn you extra points unless the professor specifies that.

Which R1A/R1B class should I take?

Make sure to research what the different writing classes entail. Comparative Literature usually has a lot of reading, and Rhetoric is considered one of the more difficult R1A/R1B classes.

You can also talk to a Peer Advisor, who usually tables at the DC (Dining Commons).

How late is tutoring offered?

Tutors are available from 8-10PM. Refer to the tutoring schedule.

Where can I go for extra tutoring help?

The SLC (Student Learning Center) also offers tutoring services in writing.

Should I use my AP Scores to skip a class?

Earning a 4 or 5 on the AP exam can allow you to pass out of one of or both of the R1A and R1B requirements; however, it is good to take a writing class (doesn't have to be R1A/R1B) in college your first year so that you will be more prepared for what college writing is like.

If I'm not in a writing-specific class but I have a paper to write for another class (e.g. history, business, art) can I still come in for tutoring?

Yes! Whether you need help in art history or philosophy, you can drop in for tutoring! In fact, some of our tutors specialize in those subjects.

Where do I get basic information about writing standards in college?

At each Academic Service Center, there is a writing resource binder that contains information on essay writing in college, such as in-class essays and research papers. Feel free to visit the Academic Service Center at your residence hall to look through the binder. Writing tutors can also refer you to it.

If I go to a tutor, will I get an "A" on my paper?

Tutors are not here to proofread. Tutors are here to GUIDE you in writing and help you learn so that you will be able to improve and write well on your own.
